Why Taiko no Yu Is Our New Favorite Winter Hideaway
It has been an incredibly busy month for us, and the days are growing colder with each passing morning. In just a few more days, the snow will begin falling almost daily. To take a break from the pace of life—and to celebrate our wedding anniversary—my husband, Shingo, and I decided to spend a relaxing day at Taiko no Yu.
Located in Mikasa, Hokkaido, Taiko no Yu 太古の湯 is a wonderfully calming escape. It was our first visit, and we were instantly impressed by its warm and inviting interior. The entrance fee is 1,000円 per person, which already includes both a face towel and a bath towel. The facility itself is surprisingly spacious. We arrived right at 10 a.m., checked in, and took some time exploring the souvenir shops and peeking into the different areas before heading to the public bath.

There are three main rest areas to enjoy. The first is near the souvenir shop and reception desk, where guests can sit and enjoy snacks. The second is a family-friendly space where both kids and adults can sit, nap, or read manga. And then there’s my personal favorite—the quiet sleeping area, filled with reclining chairs perfect for dozing off or watching TV. The facility also includes a room full of massage chairs and separate massage rooms for those wanting a foot or full-body treatment.

Even though there were many visitors that day, the space never felt crowded. Some facilities, like the toilets, locker rooms, and public baths, are a little dated, but everything is clean, comfortable, and well cared for. The staff were friendly and attentive throughout our stay. The restaurant menu was also impressive, offering ramen, curry, pasta, pizza, and a variety of desserts.

We ended up bathing twice and spent the entire day simply relaxing. It was the perfect anniversary escape, and we enjoyed it so much that we’re already looking forward to going back.
If you’re ever in Hokkaido and looking for a place to unwind, I wholeheartedly recommend a visit to 太古の湯. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, and you can truly reconnect with yourself—and with the people you’re with.
You can check out their website here.
Treat yourself to a day (or more!) of comfort and warmth—I know we’ll be returning soon.
